Today’s message comes from a serious, heartfelt and sensitive place. I’m dedicating my video message to Mark Urban and his family. Mark was a smoke jumper who had his last jump on September 27. He was a friend of mine and the husband of my best friend Rebecca. My message is meant to honor Mark and to Rebecca.
Please don’t wait to do the things that are important to you in your life, the things you are passionate about, the things that you’ve put to the side as something to do “someday.” I’d like you to reconsider because life is very, very short.
Mark was only 40 years old. He lived a passionate life. His loved his career. He was an avid motorcyclist and bicyclist. He spent much of his free time enjoying those activities. And of course his biggest passion was his love for his wife. They did the things they both loved together — traveling, hiking, camping, spending time with friends — things that were important to them.
I’d like you to go through a three-step process today:
- Write down what you’re passionate about but have been putting aside. Grab some paper and pen or use whatever technology you want, and make a list of those things.
- Place a number next to each one indicating how important it is to you.
- Make some small step toward your top three things today (Start the first chapter of the book you’ve been meaning to write. Sign up for kayak lessons. Book a flight to see a friend. Make a hotel reservation in your dream destination).
Whatever these are for you, I want to stop putting them into tomorrow, because tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Thank you for joining me today. I’m sending lots of love and prayers to Mark and Rebecca Urban and their families.
